Today Is First Thursday in Summit

First Thursday is today, and Summit has a good one planned.

This is your reminder to leave the house, take a walk through town, see some art, try something new, and enjoy a Thursday that does not feel like a Thursday. A minor miracle, really.

Today’s events are free and open to the public, with opportunities to explore exhibitions, visit local businesses, take a dance lesson, and spend time with neighbors downtown.

See Art Around Town

Start with a visit to the Summit Free Public Library, where Zenia Olesnyckyj: Impressions of Alaska is on view. The exhibition brings the colors and landscapes of Alaska to Summit, offering a quiet and beautiful stop in the middle of town.

You can also stop by Kanibal + Co. to see Chelsea Leifken: Devour What You Love, a collection of watercolors by the local artist. It is a great pairing: original artwork, a favorite Summit shop, and the very real possibility that you will find a gift for someone and accidentally keep it for yourself. The Art Center is also hosting a Midday Gardening Tour with an Artist, led by artist-in-residence Gabriella D’Italia. It is another chance to experience the creative side of Summit, this time outdoors.

Try Something New

First Thursday is not only about looking. It is also about participating.

Fred Astaire Dance Studios is offering free dance lessons, giving visitors a chance to learn a few steps, loosen up, and try something joyful. No expertise required. Enthusiasm counts. So does showing up.

And Ram Gallery has a new exhibition on display Liz Murphy’s In Contrast.

Spend the Evening at the Art Center

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey will host An Evening in the Galleries from 5:30 to 7 PM, with light refreshments and time to explore the spring exhibitions.

On view are: In Conversation: Will Wilson in the Main Gallery, presented in partnership with Art Bridges; Present and Growing, featuring Gabriel Garcia Roman; With Passing Years, featuring Chrystofer Davis

Summit First Thursday is about making space for art, connection, and local life in the middle of the week. Tonight is a great night to come out and be part of it.
