First Thursday is back on Thursday, June 4, and Summit has a full day planned. This month’s lineup starts in the morning, carries through the afternoon, and ends with a big downtown celebration for families.
Start the day at the Summit Free Public Library with Zenia Olesnyckyj: Impressions of Alaska, on view from 9 AM to 9 PM. The exhibition brings together photographs, embroideries, and collages inspired by the artist’s journey through the southern coastal region of Alaska. Her work explores color, texture, pattern, and the feeling of discovery in the natural world.
From 10 AM to 12 PM, stop by the One Day Pop Up Art Show, organized by Aschwald Art Advisory. The show takes place at a private Summit residence, with the address shared after RSVPing (go to the event for the link). Featured artists include Valerie Flax, Kate DeOssie, Sunil Garg, and Kathi Olsen. There is also an additional June 4 evening time listed, so check the event page for details.
At RAM Gallery, visitors can see In Contrast by Liz Murphy from 12 PM to 4 PM. While you are there, you can also enter to win an 8” x 8” original painting.
Looking to move a little? Fred Astaire Dance Studios is offering a free introductory dance lesson gift certificate from 12 PM to 9 PM. Stop in, check out the studio, and pick up a certificate that can be redeemed anytime. Low-pressure dancing is the best kind of dancing. No one needs to begin with full ballroom-drama energy.
From 12 PM to 1:30 PM, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey will host Sound Bath Meditation & Art Making, a somatic practice combining crystal singing bowls and hands-on art-making. Materials will be provided. Bring a yoga mat or seating; the event will be held on the lawn if the weather cooperates. Registration is required (go to the event for the link), and the cost is $15.
The day wraps up downtown with Family Fun Night, presented by Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center, from 4 PM to 8 PM. Beechwood Road and Bank Street will transform into a carnival-style celebration with free activities, live entertainment, music, magic, dancing, and family-friendly performances. Expect appearances from Jumpin’ Jamie, Mr. Magico, Mr. Socks, and Eyes of the Wild.
First Thursday is a chance to explore Summit a little differently: walk into a gallery, listen to sound bowls, see local art, take a dance lesson, or let the kids enjoy downtown in full festival mode. Come for one event or make a day of it. See you Thursday!
